Bird banding at Panola Mountain State Park started in 2007 to track the changes in bird populations as the Georgia Department of Natural Resources restored the native warm season grassland. We have had tremendous success in documenting those changes, sharing data with DNR, the Institute for Bird Populations, and other organizations each year. We have become the longest-running year-round banding station in the state. We have published and presented the results from this project; as well as we have trained many banders and assistants, and hosted graduate, undergraduate, and high school student projects, and published. Aside from birds, we’ve also assisted with studies of butterflies, plants and other taxa.
This has been accomplished with the help of over 20,000 volunteer hours, with equipment that was donated, or personally purchased by Charlie Muise.
Sometime between January 26 and February 8, 2020, someone stole all of our equipment that we had left secured in a locked metal box, a mile behind a locked gate, that only authorized people can open. While we cannot prove it, we believe temporary contractors working with a utility in the area are responsible, but the utility will not assist us in our investigation. Rockdale county deputies were not able to help, although they did take a report for us.
We have now lost hope of recovering the equipment. While we were able to band last weekend using borrowed gear, this is not a long-term solution. In order to continue, we will need help. The replacement cost is over $3500.
This is not only the longest running year-round banding station in the state, but also one of the longest-running in the country. We have already documented changes in response to restoration and increasing temperatures, two issues that bridge the gap between ecology and policy. The potential for future research at long-term research sites like this one is truly immeasurable.
