Oakley’s Emergency Surgery

Donation protected
Hi, my name is Kimmie and usually I’m the one donating to causes but today I find myself on the opposite end of the story.

Little miss Oakley, is our 9-week old golden retriever. She came home last Saturday afternoon and by that same evening began to have diarrhea. By the next morning, she was nonstop puking and dry heaving.

After about an hour of dry heaving with no end in sight and bad diarrhea, I rushed her to the emergency vet. They checked her for parvo first, which was negative (thank god). On the examination table, she kept dry heaving and spewing diarrhea :(

They whisked her to the back and took X-rays which uncovered a foreign like object obstructing her intestines, creating a ton of swelling in her little body as well.

The vet said we had two options, option 1 conduct an emergency exploratory surgery to see if it was a foreign object or her intestines bunched up on themselves or option 2, do nothing, give her fluids and hope for the best.

We couldn’t just sit back and do nothing while she continued to suffer. We opted for the surgery which was the vet’s recommendation as well to give her the best chance possible.

Oakley did ok during surgery, she couldn’t keep her temperature up, so it was touch and go for a while. They discovered a rock stuck in her colon which they believe was the culprit of this entire event, scraping her little intestines on the way through.

After a rough first night at the vet after her surgery, she began to come around. We were able to bring her home the following night.

The incision on her tummy is darn near half the length of her entire body, but she’s been the toughest little girl. She is mighty, and brave and the biggest cuddle bug ever. Through all of this, she hasn’t even had one accident in the house. She simply wants to be in our arms. Luckily, I’m able to take a little time off work to give her the extra TLC she needs to recover.

I signed her up for pet insurance the day we got her, but there is a 5-day waiting period for accidents and a 30-day waiting period for illnesses - go figure it was the worst timing possible.

Which leads me to this - Her surgery cost over $8,000 which had to be paid up front. Thankfully, her breeders are great people and gave us all our money back to help with the expenses.

This year has been a particularly challenging year for us, one unfortunate event after the other, all of which have been costly, financially.

I don’t want to sit here and give a sap story because I know so many other people are struggling. But this isn’t for us, it’s for our daughter, Oakley.

If you’re able to donate to Oakley’s medical expenses in any way, we would be eternally thankful ❤️ Even just thoughts and prayers would mean the world to us as we nurse our baby girl back to health.
