Niall Donoher has been a work colleague of ours since 2018. In March 2019, he and his wife Aisling became proud parents to the gorgeous baby Dan. In December 2019, Dan was diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder called SMA Type 1, which means his muscles will progressively degenerate unless treated. The clock is against him, he needs €2.1 million raised to receive a one off treatment only available in the States.
Zolgensma is gene therapy and can only be given to children under the age of two who meet the necessary health requirements. Dan currently meets these requirements but we are against the clock. This treatment is designed to deliver a functional copy of the gene that Dan is missing (SMN 1). About 1 in every 11,000 children are diagnosed with SMA.
The life expectancy of an SMA type 1 child is 18-24 months. It had been incurable, but with this wonder drug on the market it offers Dan a chance at improved or even a normal life. Dan celebrated his 1st birthday on the 28th of March 2020.
We "Friends of Dan's Dad" are behind Niall and his family, we hope you will join us in our effort to ensure that Dan gets the lifesaving treatment that he needs.
