Elizabeth Kwambie Nyambane Hospital Bill

On August 10, 2021 Lissie (aka Kwambie, Liz) joyfully announced the birth of her 2nd son nicknamed "The Star".  In true Lissie fashion, she celebrated his birth with messages and social media posts to her family and friends.  Unbeknownst to most of us, Lissie had been induced to have her baby early, because she had tested positive for COVID-19.

Within 4 days of "The Star” being born, Lissie was transferred to the ICU in Aga Khan Hospital, Nairobi, Kenya.   We were concerned but hopeful.  Lissie has always been one to overcome difficult situations.  We prayed incessantly!  Sadly on Monday, September 13, 2021 Lissie passed away after being in the ICU for 35 days. She never left the hospital after delivering her baby.

There are no words to describe the loss we feel.  Our hearts are broken for her sons “The Champ” (10 years old) and “The Star” (a little over a month old) and her only sister Marci Nyanchama.  Unfortunately, Lissie lost her father, brother and mother in the past 3.5 years.  Her father and brother passed away within months of each other in 2018.  Marci is therefore the sole surviving member of her family.

Lissie was truly an exceptional human being – heart, brains and beauty!  She had a strong sense of family.  Lissie spoke of her first son "The Champ" with so much pride! She always found ways to honor the memory of her parents and brother after their demise.  Continuing their legacy was very important to her.  Despite her personal tragedy she found the joy in living!  Lissie created a sense of community in all aspects of her personal life.  One of her greatest accomplishments is her blog https://www.wachanikwambie.com/ .

We can’t bring Lissie back, but we hope to ease the financial burden on her sister Marci. The final hospital bill is in the amount of 15 million Kenya Shillings ( USD $140,000). Lissie’s insurance only covered approximately 10% of the total cost.  Medical bills in Kenya are not written off. Any amount that you can contribute will be appreciated.  Lissie gave so much of herself to others, we hope to give back just some of what we received.

Our dear Lissie, your wings were ready but our hearts were not!
