My name is Jody Ray, freelance journalist and video creator, helping to deliver funds for food aid for vulnerable older people in Kibera, an informal community in Kenya, widely cited as Africa's largest slum.

Let me explain what's going on.

The Crisis:

Kibera is Africa's largest informal settlement, home to approximately 250,000 people squeezed into just 1.5 miles (2.5 kilometers), where life expectancy is only 30 years old. Sixty percent of Nairobi's population lives in informal settlements like this, where 85% of households are food insecure. But this means the last 15% have made it well beyond the 30-35 year mark, which is nothing short of remarkable.

However, many do not have families, have no children present, or are simply unable to work or even walk to get a daily meal. Many seniors are completely alone—their younger family members migrated for work or died from HIV/AIDS. Studies across Sub-Saharan Africa show that approximately 30–65% of community-dwelling older adults are either malnourished or at risk of malnutrition. In the worst cases, over 50% of people aged 70 and above are undernourished.

But there's a small solution.

I've partnered with Kibera Day Care Centre for the Elderly (KDCCE) and spent over a month in Kenya, learning about what they are doing on the ground every day. You can see their work in action here: https://youtu.be/rzytGzFy5OE

This small organization working from within three container units at the entrance of Kibera has a roster of approximately 1,000 seniors who they provide physical aid, socialization, and desperately needed food assistance in a sprawling slum community that lacks direct access to water, sewerage, and other securities you and I might take for granted.
