Sanitree's Battle Against Global Period Poverty
Don protégé
Only 12% of menstruating people in India are estimated to use sanitary pads. This is largely because they are unaffordable, inaccessible, and culturally stigmatised.
We are Sanitree, an Edinburgh based, student run, social enterprise. Our goal is to empower women through fighting period poverty and stigma in India and beyond. We aim to do this in an entirely sustainable way by setting up cooperatives in India, employing women who produce and sell reusable sanitary pads.
We believe this is an important fight, as in many places in India and around the world, women are forced to buy sanitary pads under the counter at pharmacies. They are handed over discreetly, carefully concealed in a plastic bag, as though making an illegal transaction.
Sanitree only sprouted roots in September 2017. All the work we’ve put in over the last few months has resulted in a hugely successful pilot project in early January 2018. Now that we are moving onto a new city, we need to keep that momentum going.
Our hope is that the Sanitree Cooperative in Bhind will be an inspiration for our current expansion in Jaipur, future expansion elsewhere, and in general throughout India. However, we’ve got a long way to go.
Now more than ever, we’re reliant on the kindness of friends and strangers to help us execute this vision. We’re so proud of the groundwork we’ve laid, and we really want to make sure it takes off from here.
We’re only a little organisation, and small donations go much further than you’d think.
Thank you!
