2020 Medical Mission to Haiti

The service:

This is my 3rd year assisting Alice Marie’s Medical Mission to Haiti. We provide ecumenical, open aire health care clinics in the northeast area of Haiti in the town of Ounanminthe. It is right on the border with the Dominican Republic. We are based at the House of the Lambs of God Orphanage (in French “La Maison des Agneaux de Dieu Orphelinat”or MADO).  Pastor Daniel Paul and his wife, Mommie Clynie, have more than 70 children in their care along with a community school and church. They also have a mission church at Baja (8 miles to the south) along with garden farms that produce 40% of the children's food.

We spend a total of 7 days in Ouanaminthe and we provide care and medications to 35-40 people per day per provider, serving MADO’s school children, families and community members. We hold clinics in Ouanaminthe, Baja and Terrier Rouge. We donate supplies to: Danita's Orphanage, Univers Clinca Medical, Good Samaritan Catholic Nursing Home, MADO orphanage, Footprints of the Son and a doctor friend who periodically renders care to MADO children.

While staying at MADO we do enjoy providing some good old fun, these are children after all. My team members an I set up a movie night for the boys (this year hopefully showing the Lorax!).  We try to treat the boys with new sports equipment each year, however I’ve found that their favorite thing we brings are colorful balloons and bubbles. We also have a craft night with the older girls. Last year I brought down my Polaroid camera with enough film that every girl could have a picture of herself, and her sisters, and decorate them for fun! We’ve also purchased multiple sewing machines and give nightly lessons to the older girls and continue the tradition of teaching a practical trade. We hope to purchase basic carpentry tools for the boys (hammer, saw, etc) to begin teaching handyman skills. We will pay for supplies in town.

Each year we have a party for the children that we give money to Mommie Clynie to shop for snacks (A difficult task in an open market). Last year it was candy and soda. We provide snacks, games, coloring activities, movies and this year hope to provide books (in french).

The Costs:

We pay our own transportation costs and in- transit costs. We use donated monies to pay for:

·     duffle bag transport costs ($150 each x 5-8 = $750)

·     gasoline for Pastor transporting us to various sites, a minimum of $200 (per team member)

·     room and board for the week ($200 to 400 per team member)

·     medical supplies

·     US purchased medications ($250-300 usually)

·     paying our interpreters ($80 per team member)

·     needed supplies for equipment repairs and maintenance

·     children's underwear and shoes, batteries, soccer balls, baby formula, locally purchased supplies, local pharmacy costs along with bills for patients we send to higher levels of care

·     Momba butter (enriched peanut butter) for giving out to our hungry clinic patients and folks in the neighborhood. Each case is $63

·     Airport customs entering Haiti ($100-280)

Packing:
It's our best guess and whatever we have money to purchase.

We are hoping to purchase "grow with you shoes" ($15 each), bibles, choir robes, a few more mango & banana trees, bingo game prizes, first aid items, nursing and ESL books, children's books in French and rice for the MADO children.

Research and Thesis:
My scholarly goals in Haiti are to start to formulate a thesis that I will work on through my major and schooling at the Rochester Institute of Technology including: ways to limit health effects of unmanaged waste, effects on burning waste on local air quality, and how a lack of waste management effects the . I also plan to discuss the health benefits of Momba butter and learn more about agricultural hardships. Longterm- I would like to provide the opportunity to develop a solar farm so that we could start providing water filtration for MADO.

Why help us help Haiti?
Haiti is the poorest country in our Western Hemisphere. Their island is only 50 miles from America territories so, they are our neighbors. Why not help? Only 2 out of every 5 children are expected to live past their 6th birthday in Haiti. Children in Haiti don't usually get food every day. Health care is accessible to very few in Haiti. Parents have to pay government schools to educate their children and consequently, few get an education.

In the wise words of my team, “ Can you find it in your heart to donate the same amount as your last evening out, the amount you spent in fast food this week, the amount you have spent in alcohol this month, the amount you spent on shows or entertainment this month? Every dollar counts and is spent with good stewardship.”

"What you have done fore the least of my brothers, you have done unto Me."
