Hi everyone. I am Pouya.
Have you ever seen an animal on the street, in need of help, but you just didn’t know what to do? Or you didn’t have the time or money to help an animal in need? Maybe this hasn’t happened to you personally, but it happens to many people.
It has happened quite a few times to my friends, and that’s why we – having worked for decades in the software industry – decided to team up, talk to animal rescue experts and create an innovative platform that will hopefully supercharge ordinary people’s ability to help our furry friends, wherever and whenever they need our help.
So let me quickly answer your questions about the project:
What exactly is the problem you are trying to solve?
• In many places there aren’t many animal rescue organizations, or they are inefficient
• Compassionate people want to help with rescue, but they can’t get organized
• It is difficult and costly for a single person to execute a successful rescue
• Even if they find organizations to contribute to, there isn’t enough transparency to inspire confidence and collaboration
So what is this innovative solution you talked about?
• We call it “rescute”! It is a crowdsourced animal rescue platform
• A collaborative app that allows anyone to report the location of an animal in need
• Notifies all registered Samaritans in the area to view the report, including pictures and location
• Allows everyone to collaborate and provide financial, logistical, moral support and advice for each case report
• Locates the closest vet and provides other useful utilities
Take me through how this app would work.
• A Samaritan locates an animal in need, creates a quick report in the app and attaches pictures and current location
• A timeline is created and notification is sent to other Samaritans in the area
• Any additional requests (like additional help to transport the animal) are then added to the report, and anyone can chime in or join to help with transport or other requests
• Vet bills can be attached and everyone can chip in to pay for the bill
• Lab results and prescriptions can be photographed and attached to the report timeline, so case reports become animal’s medical history
• Animal can be put up for adoption and everyone can see it
And what would be the benefits?
• Transparency
Everyone can contribute to specific cases and track where their donations are spent, encouraging engagement.
• Motivation
Smallest contributions can have a visible impact on specific cases, spreading support over a larger population
• Medical History
Encouraging attachment of medical documents for reimbursement, medical history of rescued animals can be compiled and shared with the vets
What have you done so far?
We’ve reached out and interviewed people with experience in animal rescue, both individuals and animal shelters, and we’ve started building the core of the platform. My team has been working on the project for a while, and we realized to continue the project we’re going to need help. “What better way to create a platform based on the power of the crowd, than to ask the crowd for help?” we thought.
Where would my donations be spent?
As this is a nonprofit project meant to solely benefit animals, my team has volunteered and is spending their time and effort to make this platform a reality. The money you donate will be used to support the team financially, help hire new developers if and when need arises, rent servers and the necessary infrastructure to run the platform.
About 3000 dollars is the cost of having a developer work on a commercial project for a month in Canada. But as rescute is a nonprofit and counts on volunteers around the world, we are trying to have the app developed elsewhere to keep the costs down. The project takes a few months to build and it will need additional developers, so we are being conservative with our ask.

I am Pouya . I have a Master’s degree in Computer Science and have worked in the software industry for over a decade. Currently I am a Senior Machine Learning Engineer at Kinaxis . In this project, I have two other teammates – also veteran software people - working as developers on rescute.
