My name is Avitall, I'm Germany's first female Jewish cantor.
I work for the Jewish Community as a cantor (Synagogue Oranienburger Straße in Berlin-Mitte). It's the Community I grew up in (City West). What I missed while growing up here in Berlin, was seeing Jewish life in the center of society. This piece of art- I would like to introduce to you now- is a wonderful way to bridge the gap between past and future, inviting everyone to enjoy.
„A Chandelier for Berlin’s Ku‘damm“
A new beacon for our boulevard: the sculpture, which is going to be erected on the center island on the crossing between Ku’damm and Knesebeckstraße, will bring Jewish life back into the center of society – and back to a quarter where Jewish life strived before the Shoah.
The internationally renowned designer Arik Levy created the 4m x 4m sculpture envisaging a not quite completed Star of David. You can also see two people, facing each other and communicating. The chandelier is a commitment for this meeting place and for a flourishing Jewish life in the City West.
On Friday nights the Levy’s sculpture will be illuminated, highlighting the place as a center of Jewish life in Berlin. On Saturday nights the light will go out again, with special light effects, marking the end of Shabbat.
Cultural past and present will be attractive especially for young people, thus avoiding associating the Jewish community exclusively via the Shoah.
With your help, we want to erect the sculpture within the next twelve months on the Ku’damm.
The project is worth approximately 280.000 Euro and depends on private donations. Structural requirements and implementation need a professional approach which we cannot provide on our own. Therefore, we count on civic commitment and your support.
We will thank you for your support in a special way, offering gifs for different sums of donations. The names of the donators will also be engraved on the big sculpture.
We hope to have sparked your interest to participate in creating a new beacon for the City West.

„Ein Leuchter für den Ku’damm“
Ein neues Leuchtzeichen für unseren Boulevard: Eine Skulptur - geplant für die Mittelinsel an der Kreuzung Kudamm und Knesebeckstraße - wird jüdisches Leben in die Mitte der Gesellschaft bringen - in eines der Zentren jüdischen Leben vor der Shoah.
Gestaltet von dem internationalen Designer Arik Levy, schafft das ca. 4 m x 4 m große Bildwerk aus einem Blickwinkel die Anmutung eines nicht vollendeten Davidsterns, aus anderem stehen sich zwei Menschen gegenüber, kommunizieren miteinander. Der Leuchter als Bekenntnis für diesen Ort der Begegnung und für aufblühendes jüdisches Leben in der westlichen City.
Freitag abends nach Sonnenuntergang wird die Levy-Skulptur den Ort illuminiert aufleuchten lassen als Zentrum jüdischen Lebens in Berlin. Mit Lichteffekten geht das Licht Samstag nachts wieder aus und markiert damit das Ende des Shabbats. Kulturelle Vergangenheit und Gegenwart werden gerade auch junge Menschen ansprechen, ohne dass die jüdische Gemeinschaft ausschließlich in den Zusammenhang mit der Shoah gerückt würde.
Mit Ihrer Hilfe möchten wir die Skulptur in den nächsten zwölf Monaten am Ku´damm aufstellen.
Das rund 280.000 Euro teure Projekt ist auf private Spenden angewiesen. Wir allein können die aufwändige Statik und Ausführung nicht übernehmen. Wir setzen auf Ihr bürgerliches Engagement und Ihre Unterstützung.
Für Ihre Förderung danken wir Ihnen in ganz besonderer Weise. Je nach Spendenhöhe erhalten Sie unterschiedliche kleinere oder größere Geschenke. An der großen Skulptur erfolgt mittels einer Gravur die namentliche Erwähnung der Förderer.
