Eagle Project: Diabetes Kits for Students

Hi, my name is Connor Pugh, and I am making a service project for my Eagle Rank in Boy Scouts. The project aims to aid newly diagnosed students with diabetes in the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) system in attaining materials and resources not covered by basic healthcare. I am seeking funds with this GoFundMe to purchase materials for the kits. The materials of the kits are as follows:

An insulin cooler

An ID bracelet

A reusable water bottle

A portable sharps container

A pocket calculator

Glucose Tablets

A pamphlet containing guides and resources from significant Diabetes organizations, as well as descriptions of all the items in the kit.

All in an easy-to-carry bag

Being diagnosed with Diabetes constitutes a significant lifestyle change and requires both the student and their parents/guardians to dedicate a lot of time and effort to keeping the diagnosed person healthy. Many of the issues the student and their guardians face in early diagnosis among general adaptation, is securing materials and tools to make diabetes treatment safer and more manageable. Many of these tools and materials can either be hard to find or very expensive if one does not know where to look, adding to the financial burden diabetics already have given the high price of many types of insulin and other diabetic treatments. Given how difficult it is for students and their guardians to adjust to diabetic living when newly diagnosed, I believe these kits would be extremely helpful and necessary tools to make the adjustment just a little bit easier and give the student access to tools and materials they may not have been able to without these kits. I am a type 1 Diabetic myself and witnessed the extraordinarily difficult learning curve that comes with diagnosis, and I hope this project can flatten the curve for other students in the future.

The goal of the project is to create a minimum of 60 kits to sustain the program for a year.
