Mr. Lorne Draskovic, known affectionately as “Mr. D” by his students and colleagues, has done everything right his entire life. Always responsible and hardworking, he had these core values instilled in him from a young age. One diagnosis, however, changed everything.

Mr. D is a veteran who proudly served as a firefighter in the United States Navy. Following his discharge, he dedicated his life to education, serving our community for over 20 years. Love, Wisdom, Truth, Bravery, Honesty, Humility, and Respect—these are the core values our community holds dear, and we are hoping to rise to the occasion to help a beloved teacher, friend, and veteran who embodies them all.

As a graduate of the very first cohort of the Urban Indian Teacher Training Program, Mr. D paved the way for other Native educators who came after him, dedicating his life's work to empowering Native youth. Corny dad jokes and funny nicknames are his signature trademarks, and he has impacted generations of students. Bridging his respect for both military and Native cultures, he organized yearly Veterans Day ceremonies to honor those who served selflessly—an annual tradition that has brought profound, reciprocal benefits to our veterans, students, and community members alike.

For the last three years, Mr. D has been bravely battling neck cancer. To make matters even more difficult, his health insurance was recently terminated. Healing takes time, and the expenses incurred—even prior to losing coverage—have created an overwhelming financial hardship. His treatments have been expensive, invasive, and deeply debilitating. Proper rest and medical care are absolutely essential to his recovery right now, but the loss of insurance has left him and his wife in a vulnerable position. Heartbreakingly, all of this comes just a few months after the devastating loss of their precious daughter.

Mr. D is full of humility, and it is incredibly hard for someone of his impeccable nature to ask for help—so his friends and community are asking on his behalf.
