When Hurricane Laura struck Lake Charles and the surrounding communities, the Southwest Louisiana chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America got right to work. We quickly got connected with New Orleans DSA and Mutual Aid Disaster Relief to start organizing mutual aid and direct relief for their neighbors and community members. By the morning after the storm, the coalition that we were working in was scouting out the area, taking inventory of the damage, and mobilizing networks of support across the Gulf South and beyond. By the next day, we had assembled and deployed teams of volunteers who were gathering and relaying supplies, tarping roofs, and bringing much needed water and fuel to people across the region. But Southwest Louisiana DSA is a small chapter -- only about 20 active members -- and some of us were displaced by the storm ourselves. And the work isn’t close to finished: we’ll be mucking and gutting and tarping and hauling for months to come, putting our homes and communities back together. We want to be able to offer relief to our neighbors that doesn’t come with any strings attached, and in order to do that, we need more funds. Any money raised through this fundraiser will go directly to Southwest Louisiana DSA’s hurricane relief efforts: buying tarps, drinking water, non-perishables, medical supplies, generators, chainsaws, meals for volunteers, PPE, tools, hygiene supplies, etc. Please pitch in what you can! We are in this for the long haul. Solidarity!
