Donovan's Dream - saving more precious lives
Donovan was rescued from a horrendous life living on the streets. Rescued at just 4 weeks old, he was extremely ill and required immediate vet treatment. Despite the very best of veterinary treatment, our gorgeous little man lost his fight and succumbed to his illness at just 6 weeks of age.
Canberra Street Cat Alliance (CSCA) need your help to save more cats and kittens just like Donovan from living a life on the streets.
CSCA is a self-funded rescue working exclusively with cats born and living on the streets. These precious souls are born to a life on the streets through no fault of their own. They are often found living in industrial areas, surviving by rummaging through rubbish or relying on the kindness of the community to survive.
CSCA run several programs, all contributing to its mission of reducing the number of community-owned cats living on the streets. Cats rescued by the organisation are provided with essential vetwork and treated for any injury or illness, which many of them are extremely ill when rescued.
All kittens are placed into the Streets to Sheets foster care program. While in care, the kittens undergo intense socialisation, learning to trust humans before being adopted into loving families once they graduate foster care.
Adult cats are temperament tested, with those deemed suitable being placed into foster care. Adult cats that do not qualify for foster care are provided all required vet treatment including desexing, vaccination and microchipping before being returned to their home location. Cats returned to their home location are then monitored and fed daily and provided any ongoing vet treatment for the remainder of their lives.
Sadly, newly passed legislation will prevent CSCA from continuing to work with community cats. From 1 July 2022 all cats born after this date are subject to mandatory containment, removing the ability to return community cats to their home locations after desexing. There is capability to provide CSCA with an exemption under the new legislation, however the government have advised no cats will be exempt from mandatory containment.
What exactly does this mean? This means we have a small window of approximately 2 years to desex the community cats that are currently living on the streets. We need to act quickly before this opportunity passes but unfortunately resources prevent us from doing this in a timely manner.
We need to act now! If we do not act now the numbers of street cats is going to increase once the window closes. More kittens will be born on the streets meaning more cats and kittens will die a cruel and painful death. We need to act now to have the greatest impact and we need your help to achieve our goal, the goal being no community cats living on the streets.
We need a bigger intake facility to allow us to trap and accommodate larger numbers before the window of opportunity closes forever. We need to lease a commercial premises and need to urgently raise the funds to do this for the next two years.
Sadly, if we do not get a larger intake facility we will have to scale back our operations which will be extremely detrimental to the community cats of Canberra. Please help us help them.
Donovan deserved a life of love with all the luxuries of domestic bliss bestowed upon him by his loving family. Donovan's Dream is a dream CSCA holds to help more precious street cats living on the street to live the life we dreamed Donovan would be living.
Their lives do matter and we need to urgently help as many of the street cats of Canberra while we can. Please help us help them by making Donovan's Dream a reality.
Donate now! If you are not in a position to donate yourself, please help us spread the word of the plight of the community cats in Canberra due to the changes in legislation.
Help us to help them!
