In October I'm taking time off work to volunteer in Europe for Ukrainian children and families fleeing the war (into Poland). I'll be volunteering for two organizations, Fundacja Ocalenie and Fundacja Internationaler Bund Polska. Part of the volunteering will take place in a Polish town (Przemyśl) a few miles from the Ukraine border for an organization (Fundacja Ocalenie) that serves as kind of a daycare - where volunteers care for/babysit children of various ages while the parents rest, look for jobs, fill out paperwork, etc. The other half of my volunteering will be in Krakow, one of Poland's larger cities in the south, at a distribution center that provides food and clothing to displaced people and families from the war.
I've traveled extensively in Europe and have visited both Ukraine and Poland several times. After the war began, I researched volunteering in Europe to help Ukraine refugees a few months ago and read a New York Times article that led me to the two organizations that I'm volunteering for.
I am hoping to raise funds to purchase toys, games, arts & crafts, school supplies and additional items for the children and families who have recently fled Ukraine. According to the U.N., at least 12 million people have fled their homes since Russia's invasion of Ukraine– with more than 5 million fleeing to neighboring countries like Poland. The children now live in a foreign country, don't speak the language, and have likely been through some very difficult times. Some have lost family members in the war, while others have fled with their mothers while their fathers are back in Ukraine fighting.
