Terry's Fight for Stability and Health

Dearest supportive Smith community,

First and foremost, we’d like to start by thanking everyone who has shown up for our family in droves whether it be by lovingly providing meals, transportation, emotional support and all the things that have sustained us during these very trying 22 months of Terry’s health journey. It has not gone unnoticed and is 100% appreciated.

Just a little bit of background about our fearless & focused warrior…Terry was a devoted employee of Traverse City Public Schools for 23 years, most recently as head principal at West Middle School. He has tirelessly mentored many of today’s TC teachers, and has always strived to be a positive role model for all students and staff, not only professionally, but in his home life as well. Many of you have been touched by Terry’s upstanding character and see him as a man of very high integrity. Family has always been at the forefront of his vision.

With that being said, the past few months have presented some new challenges for Terry with several bouts of pneumonia and hospitalizations. His most recent hospital stay has brought numerous testings, procedures and a team of doctors. As a result of some of these tests, we’ve learned that Terry has developed lesions on his brain that are directly related to his kidney cancer. While this news initially knocked the wind out of our sails, the valiant warrior in Terry has emerged with a fighting spirit. It has often been said, “there is NO expiration date on my life” and, “I am NOT a statistic”! He has every reason to focus on a future…all we need to do is look at the immense love that radiates from him towards his wife, Lindsay, and 5 boys!

We know there are many unknowns ahead but are focused on the end result in stability of this beastly disease. If anyone can do it, Terry can!!

If you feel so inclined, we would greatly appreciate any monetary donation you see fit to help with household expenses, as well as possible future travel expenses if that becomes necessary. We will leave no stone unturned and are determined to keep fighting with every ounce of energy in us!
