My name is Johnny Rushing and I have been battling Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC) for 15 years which is a slow-progressing chronic disease that scars the bile ducts and can eventually block them. The bile builds up in the liver and makes it harder for the liver to work. The condition may lead to liver cancer.
Advocating for yourself when the ER docs don't know what's going on they start to judge and say we'll you don't look this sick. Well I tell them to look at my chart contact GI and I can and will call my docs as I have their cell numbers and they told me to use them if needed.
Baylor Scott & White has been good to me and I thank God for that.
There has been a lot of hospital stays in which caused my bile ducts to close and an ERCP had to be performed. They would open the bile ducts by balloon or sometimes leave in a stent in which sometimes also caused me to have pancreatitis in which would have called for longer days in the hospital.
I missed a lot of family functions and funerals by being sick and or in the hospital.
I've helped a lot of people and now I'm asking for help. You never know when its your turn. We are all a step away from God knows what.
There is no cure or medication in which I learned early on but there are researchers from all around the world trying to find out what is causing PSC as I learned from going to a PSC Partners seeking a cure
conference in September.
What I saw and learned is that they treat you as family and give out a lot of information. One big concern was that there is a lot of kids that are suffering as I was. It has to be painful for them because it was a lot on me.
I was hit hard with acute sepsis and E. coli in my bloodstream for 2 months. They ended up bringing me to the Infectious Disease department to help. They tried everything, including sending me home with IV meds to give myself. My body did not give up. This was Halloween night. I took my time getting home; it was just a feeling that you would understand if you are in touch with God. When I did make it home, that feeling came back, and I got nervous. 30 minutes later, I got a call from the hospital asking if I wanted a liver transplant. If so, I needed to come back to Dallas and be there at 7:15 am. Everything was explained accordingly, but I knew things could change, and I could be heading back home if anything was wrong with the donor's liver. God made sure everything was in line. After a couple of hours, I checked in again, and the hospital staff was asking if I was ready. She excitedly yelled, "You are getting a new liver."
This was November 01, 2025.
Major Setback: November 12, 2025, my 12th day of healing after walking and having a few episodes of BP dropping, I was rushed back to the ER! Internal bleeding and a bleed from a biopsy took over. Thank God the liver team made the right call and redid everything! Now my day 12 started over to my day 1. Painful, but I am still blessed.
I am asking for donations financially because of the strain of 2 surgeries back to back, unknown health expenses and to bring light to living donor donations to help save the next person's life.
