Light for Learning: DIY kits for displaced kids
Donación protegida
58 million children around the world are out of school and 28 million kids are living in conflict and/or are displaced.
At Ambessa Play, we worked with displaced children globally to create a DIY flashlight kit that they can assemble and use.
Our Kickstarter campaign was a success, allowing us to send kits directly to our customers with a 'buy one, give one' approach, providing a kit to a child in need for every purchase made.
A few of our backers asked to donate more kits directly and this inspired us to launch this GoFundMe campaign, inviting people to contribute whatever they can, be it £1 or £100 to donate a DIY flashlight to a child without access to electricity.
Aiming to reach 10,000 children...
We hope you will support us on this journey. We set this £150k as a goal to one day provide 10,000 children with access to light and an educational resources.
If you would like to pre-order a kit for yourself (when you do this, one is automatically donated) please visit: https://ambessaplay.com/products/diy-flashlight
Co-design process:
We were asked by kids to build this DIY flashlight and so naturally, they were involved in every stage of the design. We spent a lot of time in camps/settlements working with charities such as Project Play, Refugee Council, Care4Calais and Terre des Hommes.
- 78% of refugees are displaced for at least 5 years (UNHCR, 2019)
- 72% of refugees live in exile in countries that neighbour their conflict affected countries of origin (UNHCR, 2021)

Where will they go to?
We are currently working with charities to donate kits in batches to Eritrea, Hungary, Tanzania, Kenya, Greece, Jordan, Brazil and Guinea. We will share an update after every trip.
