Derrick & Katy Hepworth Fire Recovery Fund
Don protégé
Hello and thank you for visiting this page. Please read til the end.
On Thursday, April 16, 2020 at about 3:00 am, my good friends Derrick and Katy Hepworth were woken up by their dog Dani, who was barking at something outside. When Derrick got up to see what was bothering her, he was shocked to see that their South Salt Lake apartment complex was going up in flames.
Grabbing only their pup, the Hepworths were forced to leave their home and belongings and escape the fire. After talking to Derrick about his experience, he explained that not long after they got out, the wall of fire completely blocked their door. They were smart to act so quickly and lucky to get out of the apartment alive.
While the investigation is still ongoing as to how and why the fire started, it is believed that a single car caught fire in the covered parking in front of the apartments. This car fire spread to 18 other vehicles next to it, and then spread to the apartment building, destroying 24 apartment units. Derrick and Katy's Honda Civic was the car directly next to the one that started the fire; their car is nothing more than a metal frame now.

We all know that life is already crazy at this time, with the spread of COVID-19 as well as sporadic earthquakes happening throughout Utah. Many of us struggle with uncertainty about our jobs, income, and safety; there is no good time to lose everything in a fire, but can you imagine losing all your belongings and your home during a global pandemic? That is Derrick and Katy's reality right now.
Derrick and Katy both have been working full time while Derrick attends school online for computer programming, something that has been taking up most of his time. However due to circumstances from the COVID-19 outbreak, on top of everything else he's dealing with, Derrick unfortunately lost his job just a week ago. Among things destroyed in the fire was his laptop, which is how he attends school. I can tell you personally he is so committed to his schooling and spends most weekends taking classes or working on assignments instead of hanging out with us and our friends (prior to social distancing). He and Katy are both very dedicated to improving their lives through hard work and commitment. They do not deserve to have their lives pulled out from under them.

We are starting this fund to help Derrick, Katy, and their pup Dani recover from this devastating accident. The next few weeks/months are going to be really tough for them and it's unclear what kind of recovery they can expect from insurance. They had renter's insurance through the apartment complex, but apparently they won't cover anything if the damage is more than $100,000 and in this case the damage is in the $millions. It is unlikely they will receive anything from their renters insurance, so they need ALL the help they can get!
Let's give as much or as little as we can to help them get back on their feet, especially during this difficult time.
In case you're wondering who I am and want to make sure this is a legitimate campaign, my name is Ryan. Derrick and Katy are two of my closest friends and live one neighborhood over from me. They would never ask for this, but they deserve our help.
Please, donate anything you can. We don't know how much they'll really need. If you can't help them financially, I know Derrick and Katy would both benefit from a laptop if you have one to donate, You can also reach out to me via GoFundMe with any questions about other items they might need aside from monetary donations. I will update this account as often as I get new information.
Thank you for reading and contributing. Hopefully we can lift just a little bit of the weight off their shoulders.
