We ask that you support David Clay and his beloved wife of 30 years Teresa. Your gift is needed for a respectful funeral and medical bills after years of illness that drained their life savings.
David passed away on July 31st, a week after his 86th birthday, from pneumonia complicated by Alzheimer's disease and a hip fracture.
Anyone who met David quickly spotted the wit, wisdom, and down-to-earth kindness that inspired his friends to call him the British Mr. Rogers. You also soon knew of his 60-year golf career and its many adventures he enjoyed through his competition and teaching.
As a boy in England, when he first picked up a club, he recognized his life’s work. Over the years to come, he would play in 5 British Opens in his 8-year PGA tour.
In 1983, he came to US to continue his mentorship of Walker Cup champion Philip Parkin who was recruited by Texas A & M.
Another highlight of David’s long career was opening and directing for 15 years the first Arnold Palmer Golf Academy in Arizona. He and Arnold Palmer had the highest respect for each other.
Over the years, there have been much admiration for David’s teaching skills. One grateful student posted this about David: “This guy is first class. Long story short, after the first lesson...focusing on my stance / approach and other fundamentals...he had me hitting the ball longer and straighter than I ever have...at 80% of swing power.”
David retired from teaching at Houston National in 2017. In the following years, Alzheimer’s took a huge toll on David’s physical and mental sharpness and also impacted his financial wellbeing.
Teresa, David’s wife left the work world to tenderly attend to David’s growing daily needs.
In the stress of David’s illness and passing, Teresa suffered a heart attack. After a hospital stay, she is continuing her recovery at home.
