Hi, I'm Danny's daughter, Nina. As some of you may know, my dad was diagnosed with cancer in the fall of 2021. He had success with chemo and radiation. He was in remission for just a couple of months, and it came back in August of this year. He decided to do immunotherapy, but we noticed that the treatments had made him lethargic. If you knew my dad, you know he was very talkative, intelligent, hard-working, and always loved being kept busy. He continued immunotherapy until he had the stroke on November 1st. I saw my dad sitting in the chair that morning and noticed half of his face drooping. My initial instinct was to call my sister, Mindy. I told her what I was seeing, and she immediately called 911. He struggled to eat, sleep, and walk--barely functioning. Two of his doctors expressed concern and told us that if he continued to be in this state, he would not make it for more than a year. The doctors suggested we look into hospice. Someone from hospice came by to see us and told us that she did not think he was ready for hospice. After that conversation, we were able to breathe a little bit. With some tough love, we did our best to encourage dad to get up and fight this.
A few days ago, the nurse told us to call 911 because one of his toes was turning black and could be a blood clot issue. The hospital did a CT scan to determine whether the immunotherapy was effective. The CT scan read that the cancer has already spread, and the blood clot is about 4 feet. The doctors have told us they could do nothing else to treat him since he's at stage 4 cancer. They don't know how much time he has left. We were told that we needed to look into hospice.
Danny is currently at the Anderson Mercy Hospital in Cincinnati. We struggle to find a hospice due to the cost and funeral arrangements. My family and I were focused on his recovery and did not want to think dad possibly passing was an option. I'm organizing a fundraiser to fund funeral arrangements, hospice, final expenses, and end-of-life care necessities. He will leave my mom, Helen, with quite a bit of debt due to all these medical expenses. My family and I have been humbled to reach out, but we don't know how much time we have left with him. Thank you for taking the time to read this and for your love and support.
