On Monday Feb 26 I took my son to his pediatrician because he wasn’t feeling well.  He had been complaining of thrush in his mouth, perhaps from previous antibiotic treatment earlier that month. Something was different though, he was tired, cold, and definitely not himself.  He had also lost 7lbs in about 7 days.  His pediatrician tested his urine for sugar.  His blood glucose was 400.  He was in diabetic ketoacidosis caused by type 1 diabetes.  The pediatrician called the ER and  before we knew it he was being admitted to our nearest hospital.  Within a few hours we were transported via ambulance to Rady’s children’s hospital where he received an insulin drip, potassium, fluids, and treatment for his new found diabetes begun.  He now needs monthly rapid and long lasting insulin, lancets, test strips for school and home, needles for his insulin pens, annual glucagon, urinalysis strips for ketones, glucose gel, and visits to the Endocronology clinic.  I find it difficult to start a go fund me account, but this will lay a heavy monthly financial burden on our family, and we find ourselves in need of help.   You can also help with your thoughts and prayers, they mean so much to us in a time of crisis.  Thank you!
