Dale Schindler Memorial Bike Ride

Don protégé
My name is Matthew Schindler, I was diagnosed with Young Onset Familial Parkinson’s Disease in December of 2002.
I will be riding my bicycle around Kansas speaking on the importance of exercise, because of how exercise has changed my life for the better. After my diagnosis, as symptoms progressed, doctors wanted me to take more and more medicine to cope with the symptoms, to the point of feeling medicated all the time.
Exercise is not a cure, but has been found to help slow down the progression of the disease. For me, it turned my life around to the point that I discovered I could ride my bicycle again and even participate in weekly boxing classes.
I am doing this in April because April is Parkinson’s Awareness Month.
The ride is titled the “Dale Schindler Memorial Bike Ride for Parkinson’s Awareness” in honor of my Dad, who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s at a very early age. He did not have access to a support group, and at that time “young onset” Parkinson’s was not even recognized or treated differently than those diagnosed later in life.
My goal for this ride is to help Parkinson’s patients and their care partners understand that the diagnosis is not a death sentence.
This ride cannot be done without financial support, and I am asking for your help.
