THE STORY:
CRITICAL PUPPY IN SHELTER SAVED BY RESCUES AT LAST MINUTE

Susanne Spirit-Twamley and Husband Michael Twamley, Musical Truckin Dogs Rescue and Sanctuary of Corona, made its usual weekly "get out the dogs in need" at their local Corona Animal Shelter. This shelter does extraordinary care for every animal coming in, but they are not a hospital, they are a holding facility which is where Michael and Ms. Spirit's work comes in to save the day.

Last Monday, Oct.10, 2016, Ms. Spirit went to the  shelter to rescue five maybe six week old tiny and frail puppies and their Mom, now named Rosebud found by the shelter earlier that week. As Ms. Spirit approached the back area where medical needs animals are safely held, she noticed a four month old female Siberian Husky who looked awful. It appeared to be blue. The animal police officer told her the baby had been brought into the shelter on Saturday having trouble breathing, and unable to hold any foods down, and now it was Monday, the 10th of October. The shelter took the baby on Saturday to a local vet where X-rays were done, but nothing found. Result: Vet suggested Euthanizing the pup because it would cost at least a thousand dollars for the proper suspected cause, a damaged trachea, testing.
Blossom at the Sanctuary after a few days at hospital but had to be taken back next day.

At that time the baby was brought back to the shelter where a decision needed to be made for this sick baby. Then Ms. Spirit now three days later appeared, and decided on the spot to help this baby, and at least find out what was really the problem.
Picture taken at Shelter before Ms. Spirit rescued her.

Ms. Spirit told the shelter authorities that she would take her babies home, the newborns and mom, and make a plan to come back and get the sick little girl. She needed to know what facility had expertise in dealing with trachea issues, and raise the money to get the tests.

While carrying the precious cargo of babies full of fleas home, Ms. Spirit began making calls. Upon arrival at she and Michael's (her husband) home and Sanctuary Michael had the sinks ready for bathing these flea infested the size of your hand puppies and near starved, and Mom. He also has chicken hotdish all ready in little bowls to feed the new crew.

Ms. Spirit began her work trying to figure out how to help the pup; but first things first, Michael and Susanne gave the husky pup the name Blossom. "Dogs need a name," said Ms. Spirit. But right about then the phone rang, the shelter authority said the pup was really having a difficult time. Ms. Spirit remembered another emergency dog that she and Michael had taken to Yorba Linda Vet Hospital and phoned them. She cried as told the warm and caring office manager, Alice, who told Susanne that they have a doctor that knows all about this situation. She told them she was going to pick up the baby and would be heading their way in the Pet Mobile Emergency vehicle.

Michael is washing babies, preparing a beautiful suite for them to be safe and get healthy, and Ms. Spirit left. It was after hours by now at the shelter, but the animal control officer of thirty years was waiting for her, and together these two went to get the baby from the kennel to the car. It was a challenge; as the officer sat on the cement to get the frightened puppy  into her lap. This little girl, just bones, began to vomit violently. The two gals are telling the puppy stories, "You are going to be fine now, you just hang in there."

They got her into the car, placed her on a huge blanket and towels on passenger seat, and off Ms. Spirit drove. Within seconds the baby crawled over into Susanne's lap. It's traffic time on the 91, but God graced the trip. "I was sure this baby was going to die in my arms, I kept praying to God to please let her live so she can get to the hospital so they can make her better, PLEASE!" "I tried not to cry, as I knew that would upset her, and she needed peace, so I turned on KUSC.org, and we listened to classical music, and I just talked to her about the new puppies, about how when she gets better "Dad" at our home will have freshly cooked chicken for her, and words of hope." We made it there! We were bonded by now. My attire had vomit from head to toe, but it was hers, and it was okay.

Susanne also had to be on the phone to put together money. And she only knew to get off Weir Canyon exit, and call the hospital, there had been no time to get directions. She called the hospital, by now with tears, the baby was not doing very well, and the nurse guided her, staying on the phone with her, and when Ms. Spirit pulled up staff members were right there. The door was opened and the baby taken and rushed into the hospital, where a tube with oxygen had already been prepared and waiting for her. Within seconds Blossom had help.

And other staff stayed with Ms. Spirit who was now able to break down and cry, but even parking the car was a challenge, and paperwork had to be found from the shelter, and docs signed, etc. But Blossom was getting help.

Ms. Spirit then phoned her dear friend who belongs to a group of Corona women who have a rescue, Paws. Her friend, Sharon, never hesitated to help. Sharon told Susanne let me put it out to the girls. Yorba needed monies, the first round was over $1300. These gals told Susanne, "We got your back." And they did with no hesitation!   The bill at Yorba was $3,300.  These gals have saved many pitbulls by raising dollars, and they really stepped up to the plate. Thank you Paws!

HER STAY AT YORBA! DONATE

Monday: Blossom had to have a tube placed in her to receive oxygen. She was kept on this tube for awhile, blood drawn, a respiratory panel taken, and x-rays which showed nothing wrong.

However Blossom got better and within a few hours was taken into an Oxygen Room, and off the tube. She did yank out her IV which was giving her nutrients, and other goodies, so we knew this little girl had spunk. A good thing when you are sick.

Tuesday: Blossom was eating, and settling in; By the afternoon she was still in  the Oxygen tank, and doing great, but with a series of hours passing, little by little the oxygen was reduced, and eventually they were able to take her out of the specialized kennel.  She was getting better.

Wednesday: A decision was made that even though she was now stable, Blossom would stay another night.

Thursday: Ms. Spirit, really excited, went to get the puppy and bring her home. Blossom sat on her lap all the way home, and was excited to be out of the hospital. Real chicken was in a bowl mixed with some Blue canned food, and Blossom inhaled the mixture.

When she arrived at the Sanctuary, she ran in the yard, wanted to play ball, and just was so happy.

Friday: Upon a peaceful night, Blossom was picked up by Ms. Spirit and taken  out to potty, and Blossom went into a breathing attack, and began to vomit. It had been determined that the baby had some swelling in the throat, but it was healing, so Michael held the pup, and shortly Blossom felt better and the day resumed.

At 3:40 Michael heard Blossom vomiting. He screamed for Susanne to get dressed. Blossom needed to be taken back to Yorba.

Another trip on the congested freeway with Blossom cold hard blue, and again vomiting violently. This time Ms. Spirit really afraid this baby is going to die in her arms, and STUCK IN THE GRIDLOCK FROM HELL ON THE 91, Ms. Spirit called 911. "I am on the 91. I need a police escort." She was told that was not possible. So, "Well please tell your officers that a crazy lady is in a bright blue jeep heading west to get to Yorba Regional with a puppy struggling to live. Please tell them to help me, not arrest me!" The 911 person told her to just be safe. And she would put it out there about Ms. Spirit's car.

Again, the staff met her outside, and the baby had to be put back on the tube to get stable.

Saturday: Baby just trying to stay calm.

Sunday: Blossom is feeling better. Ms Spirit goes down there hoping to bring her home with the plan to go to Advanced Vet Internal Group in Tustin at 11:30 a.m on Monday.

Susanne goes in a room to play with Blossom, and blossom has another attack. A bad one, back on tube. Back with her tearing out the catherer again too. This girl has spunk. Blossom is left there.

Monday: Ms. Spirit gets to hospital now with more more more money owed, but Blossom had another attack in morning, and Susanne is told Blossom will need a vet ambulance with an oxygen chamber to take her to Tustin. $450.

Susanne followed the ambulance. But now the answers would come. Blossom was in a facility that had the means to do the complicated tests, and surgeons to back up needed work.

However, the estimate, which had to be put together on borrowed monies, was $7,100 before this office could touch the baby.

At 8 pm an agreement with the Group concluded, and Ms. Spirit, now gone 12 hour from home, was able to leave Tustin, and go home.
