Cori Mackey's Brain Cancer Treatment Expenses
Donation protected
My name is Anne Stanback, and like each of you reading this, I care about Cori and want to help her through this challenging time of brain cancer treatment.
Many of you have reached out to ask how you can help. Some of you have specifically asked if a fundraising effort would be launched. As you can imagine, Cori was a little resistant to the idea, but she knows she needs financial help for these large, unexpected expenses. And I have reminded her that people truly want to help, and this platform provides a concrete way to do that.
Cori is fortunate to have an amazingly supportive family, a wonderful network of loving friends, a workplace that supports her, and good health insurance. But even good health insurance usually will not cover all cancer treatment costs. And because Cori's cancer is so rare, her treatments are particularly specialized and expensive. And they cannot be done in Connecticut. This means she has been spending five nights a week in Boston since mid-November getting daily specialized proton radiation and chemotherapy.
We all want Cori to use every bit of her physical, mental and spiritual energy focused on beating back the cancer and spending quality time with her three children...not worrying about how she will pay her bills.
In consultation with Cori and other friends and family, we've set a fundraising goal of $25,000. This amount reflects the reduction in her salary while she is on leave from work; the cost of lodging/food/transportation while she is in treatment at Mass General in Boston; increased childcare costs; housecleaning assistance; and her out-of-pocket medical costs for 2023 and 2024 (she expects to blow through the 2024 deductible within the first month of next year).
If Cori is not able to return to work early in the new year as she hopes, her reduced salary will be a more significant burden. But for now, she is going under the assumption that she will be ready to work full time by mid-January.
If you have read Cori's CaringBridge posts, you have seen her strength and her faith shine through. I feel sure I am not the only one who has been inspired at the grace and courage and clarity she has shown.
Cori gives to others every day. So today I am asking if you will honor her tireless work as an activist and her deep care for others by making as generous of a donation as you are able to make.
Thank you for showing your love and concern for Cori in this tangible, meaningful, and much-needed way.
