Community Crisis

The school gym will be closed to all our community groups due to the horrible March weather conditions.

No more basketball, and volleyball leagues for weekend players!

It is a sad situation!

So many people in our city, but in reality this crisis is nationwide!

Indoor sports a necessary but now there is nowhere to play them!

Help us save the gym!

Collegiate School Youth Community Gym Needs your Help

Sports can change a child’s life – Be part of this change by donating
Every gymnasium throughout the world could tell its own stories:
·      The first time a student served a ball over a volleyball net
·      The first time a student made a layup in a basketball game
·      The first goal scored in indoor soccer
·      So many firsts, so many memories
·      Laughing with friends in the locker room
·      Winning your first race etc……

The John Peter Koribanics Memorial Gymnasium was constructed in 1970 and was dedicated to this Collegiate School student on May 20th, 1973.  John Peter was the oldest son of John and Irene Koribanics, and brother of Joseph and Michael Koribanic from Clifton New Jersey.  Collegiate school and the gymnasium remained an important part of the family’s life and upon her death last year, Irene contributed money to further remember her son’s name and keep the gymnasium in good condition. Athletics was an integral part of her son’s lives.
For the past 50 years, the gymnasium has been the focal point of all important events at Collegiate. Volleyball and Basketball tournaments, Jelly Wrestling, Donkey Basketball, Tricky Trays, Beef Steak dinners, Halloween parades, assemblies, school dances, and of course our graduations just to name a few.  100’s of students have graduated in this GYMNASIUM.  The tears that have been shed, the valedictory speeches, the awards given out, the guest speakers, the girls in white long dresses, the boys in tuxedos, the teachers in their caps and gowns!  Priceless memories, unforgettable moments, treasured friendships that still remain.
The one tragic flaw is all of these special events has been the ROOF LEAKING
Leaking for over 40 years, the school, the staff, and students have been handling the drama of the roof because we have never been able to afford a new roof. All the “simple fixes” and repairs have never worked, water always finds a way in.  The bleachers have been destroyed, the floor has buckled in many places, the painting of the school mascot, the cardinal, by John Borawski ruined.  Seeing the gymnasium with tarps and water buckets and ceiling tile stains on the floor is heart wrenching.  Having to cancel events for the children in our surrounding community has also truly been much to our dismay.  The children of our community enjoy playing in the gym, and participating in games, and familial events, and now, because of the deplorable conditions of the roof, we are having to witness sadness and heart break of the children who attend the school or come to participate in extra-curricular activities.
We need to save this Gym. We need to raise $150,000 dollars and finally get a new roof.  It needs to be done right, and it needs to last for the next 50 years!  Anyone who has ever taken a gym class, played a team sport, attended a high school game needs to remember how important a gym is to a school, and act with kindness with a contribution to fund this campaign.
