I’ve always been quite partial to mine. Except when they decided to go rogue and try to kill me. Not once. But twice.
My first run in with my killer boobs was in 2017. After twelve months of chemo, radiotherapy and surgery, I headed back out into the world, setting up my ‘new normal’. Things were looking good!
And then 2020 arrived. What a total clusterf*ck of a year it has been for everyone.
Killer Boob Situation Number Two kicked off in January.
This time it has decided to change its colours and come back as a different type of breast cancer, known as triple negative breast cancer, which is aggressive and less treatable.
Last week I was told it is now in my neck and my lung. For some reason though, the little sucker seems quite attached to me. The feeling is not mutual.
Stage IV Metastatic Triple Negative Breast Cancer. Now THAT is really surreal. If you consult everyone’s favourite, Dr Google, you’ll find average life expectancy is about 12 – 24 months. Bugger that I say.
People often ask what I need, what they can do to help. Cue awkward feelings on my part. But my cancery frenemy has upped the ante and now I need your help. In the most awkward of ways – via your wallet.
My oncologist (aka one of the best humans that has ever roamed the planet) feels that my best option would be a combination of chemotherapy and immunotherapy.
But there is a slight hitch.
The immunotherapy drug I need isn’t listed on Pharmaceutical Benefit Scheme for use in Triple Negative Breast Cancer so it has an out of pocket cost of $60,000. If it were on the PBS I would be looking at a total cost of under $300.
I’m really quite keen on this funny thing called life, even if it’s not all sunny days and plain sailing and want to hang around for a while longer.
So, if you are in a position to help, I would be so so very appreciative and will pay you back with cups of tea, physically distant hugs, and endless amounts of gratitude.
