Angola Carnivore Project

I’m raising funds to support the Angolan Carnivore Project by fitting a GPS tracking collar on a coalition of two male cheetah brothers in Luengue–Luiana National Park, located in South-Eastern Angola within the KAZA transfrontier conservation area.

This is a new and emerging conservation project working in one of Africa’s most understudied carnivore landscapes. After years of civil conflict, Angola is finally reclaiming its place in wildlife conservation — but there are still huge gaps in our understanding of predator ecology in this region.

Very little is known about:

Total population size

Predator movement patterns

Territory size and overlap

Survival rates and threats

How species like cheetahs are responding in areas with lower lion densities

Early indications suggest that in the absence of strong lion pressure, other predators may be doing better than expected — but without solid data, conservation decisions are based on assumptions rather than evidence.

Why a GPS Collar Matters

A single GPS collar can generate thousands of location points, providing invaluable information that helps conservationists:

Identify key habitats and movement corridors

Understand human–wildlife conflict risks

Inform land-use planning and park management

Strengthen long-term protection strategies for cheetahs and other carnivores

This information doesn’t just help the two cheetahs being collared — it benefits entire ecosystems.

What the Funds Will Support

I’m aiming to raise $8,000 (subject to final equipment costs), which will go directly toward:

Purchasing a GPS tracking collar best suited to cheetahs in this environment

Covering veterinary costs to safely locate, dart, and collar the animals

Supporting the ongoing monitoring, data retrieval, and upkeep of the collar

If we’re fortunate enough to raise more than the initial goal, additional collars may be deployed, expanding the impact of this project.

Why This Is Personal

This project, for me, is about more than data and monitoring — it’s about legacy.

I’m doing this in honour of my dad, who passed away a few years ago and was my biggest supporter in my conservation journey. Dad loved that I had taken a different path in life and followed my passion. He supported me even when he probably shouldn't have. And I knew how proud he was of me, in following my dreams.

And to honour my uncle Russell, my dad’s brother, who worked in conservation with the South Australian national parks board and passed away just six weeks before my dad. I learnt a lot from uncle Russell growing up and it was such a difficult time for my family.

They both believed deeply in protecting wildlife and supporting meaningful conservation work. By collaring a coalition of cheetah brothers and naming them after my dad and uncle, their legacy will live on — not just in name, but in action.

Each piece of data gathered will quietly contribute to stronger conservation outcomes and a lasting legacy for cheetahs in this unique landscape.
