Hometree - Royal Canal Greenway Charity Cycle
Thank you so much for supporting our mission!
What are we doing?
On Saturday August 21st a group of enthusiastic cyclists will make the journey from Maynooth to Mullingar along the Royal Canal Greenway to raise funds for Hometree (https://www.hometree.ie/what-we-do), an Irish charity looking to establish and conserve permanent native woodland in Ireland, encouraging land regeneration and biodiversity through afforestation, restoration and education.
Why plant trees?
Ireland was once a land of forests. At one time, up to 80% of the country was covered in native wildwood. Yet today, Ireland is the most deforested country in Europe. Just over 1% of that original forest cover remains. Hometree is changing this. Hometree's vision is the restoration of Ireland’s ancient wildwood. Through conservation, afforestation and education, Hometree aim to create a landscape in which people and forests flourish, together.
What will this money be used for?
The money raised through this event will go towards the acquistion of a 2.3 acre site in Avoca, Co. Wicklow which will be managed by Hometree to enhance its biodiversity value by planting native Irish trees and encouraging natural regeneration on the site.
Thank you again for your support in addressing both Ireland’s declining biodiversity crisis and the unfolding climate challenge we are all faced with, its through small actions that big change starts to happen!
