Carter James - Medical Expenses

On Thanksgiving Day 2018, Carter James Fischer was born to Becky Kalbler and Dustin Fischer. Boy, we had our Butterball, 9 pounds 6 ounces and a full head of hair! Little did we know that he would be whisked off to the University of Minnesota Masonic Children's Hospital merely an hour after he was born.
Little Carter was born not producing surfactant, a fluid secreted by the cells of the alveoli (the tiny air sacs in the lungs) that serves to reduce the surface tension of pulmonary fluids; surfactant contributes to the elastic properties of pulmonary tissue, preventing the alveoli from collapsing.
HUGE PROBLEM.
Carter was unable to breathe without help and was intubated. Doctors have struggled to determine what the cause of his inability to produce the surfactant. He has been treated with supplemental surfactant in the hopes that his body would start producing his own, only to have that fail.
At two weeks old, he underwent a lung biopsy in hopes that examination of the lung tissue would give some insight to this mystery; after two long weeks of waiting the results were inconclusive. A blood test was performed at this time and upon return of those results the news was not good, little Carter is looking at a lung transplant. Doctors are looking at alternate possibilities but the have determined what he is producing for surfactant is insufficient and will not ever be enough.
Becky and Dustin are awaiting full details of what the next steps are but we are hoping that the funds raised here will help with his already mounting medical bills, further treatments and should it come to it, a lung transplant to save his life. These funds are needed now and urgently as he will have to be moved to a hospital in Texas and moving an infant on oxygen is no small feat.
Carter is already loved by so many people; his parents, siblings, family and friends, all who are praying for his recovery. We pray that there are kinds souls who would donate to save a little boy's life.
