Carbonbike for a Champion

Our Colleague David just won the 2021 LA Marathon “Athletes with Disabilities" division on his first attempt using a borrowed set of wheels. Please join us in helping this very deserving champion get his own handcycle so he is able to train, compete and continue to make us proud! 

 

ABOUT DAVID:

Mr. David Rodarte is proudly employed as a counselor serving students with disabilities and Veterans at Cerritos College. David is also a proud Cerritos College Alumni having completed his Associates Degree for Transfer in Sociology. David completed his Bachelor’s in Sociology from University of Illinois. While attending the University of Illinois, he thrived in adaptive sports playing Wheelchair basketball. He then completed graduate coursework at California State University, Long Beach with a Master of Science in Counseling, which is where his passion for inspiring and motivating students began. When David is not counseling students, he is the head coach of the Rancho Los Amigos Wheelchair basketball team. Moreover, Rancho Los Amigos holds a special place in David’s heart, as this is where he began his adaptive sports journey.

 

THE CHAMPION NEEDS HIS OWN HANDCYCLE

On November 7, 2021, in David first marathon appearance, he won the “Athletes with Disabilities” Division of the 2021 Los Angeles Marathon with a “borrowed” handcycle, as he does not own one. Oftentimes, David struggles with the fact that most recreational activities have been inaccessible or require specialized equipment such as the handcycle due to his disability. This can be daunting and overly costly for him creating a situation where most would “give up.” Fortunately, “giving up” is not part of David’s modus operandi. David focuses on ability and possibility. David sets an exemplary example not only his students but for the broader Cerritos community with his perseverance, resiliency, and “can do” spirit. Acquiring this handcycle would grant equal access in having the opportunity to pursue and achieve his Paralympic dream. Please assist in anyway possible to help David’s Paralympic dream become David’s Paralympic reality!
