Can you help Bootstrap Compost "Go Electric" ?

Donation protected
Bootstrap Compost (aka, “Your Local Food Scrap Go-Getters!) has diverted
over 11 million pounds of food scraps from the waste stream since 2011.

We intend to quadruple that impact — which runs the gamut from GHG mitigation to job creation (and a whole lot of soil creation too) — by 2030 with the aid of new technology and the support of a PASSIONATE thriving community.

Turning food scraps into compost and returning it to our community is at the heart of what we do, but it doesn’t end there. We invest in:

☑️ Community Education

☑️ Other Social Enterprises

☑️ Our Workforce

☑️ Our Subscribers

- A NEW PATH -

Oh look, it’s Igor and Andy, peep the throwback pic to the dudes who got this all started, but wait… do you see that?

What are they sitting on?

Is that ...a
**gas-powered vehicle?**

So remember when we talked about “the rise of new technology”? Well, you’ll be stoked to know that Zeus and Pikachu have joined our team to lead the way toward electrifying our future. ⚡

I mean look what they did to one of our vans!!!

Beautiful isn’t she?

- AN ELECTRIC FUTURE -

This year we acquired a pair of new EVs (affectionally known as Zeus and Pikachu, of course). But it doesn’t end there, our goal is to swap out half our gas fleet (5 vehicles) with an electric one by 2025.

That means we’re looking for more HEROES to join us as we blaze a new path toward becoming a zero-emission enterprise.

- HUMBLE BEGINNINGS -

It’s been 12 years since Bootstrap Compost kicked off its community-focused food scrap pickup service in the City of Boston.

Restless and hungry, our first move was to bomb through the streets of #JamaicaPlain on a skateboard to save organics — superhero-like — from the waste stream.

Soon after, with interest pouring in from

- Charlestown
- Cambridge
- Somerville

we transitioned to a hand truck and subway pass. Later, Bootstrap founders Andy and Igor added bikes and trailers to the mix.

Fast forward to today and look at how far we’ve come

- WHO WE SERVE -

Over a decade in, with thousands of commercial and residential subscribers spread across

- Massachusetts
- Rhode Island
- Southern New Hampshire
- The Hudson Valley

#BootstrapSquad

- OUR GOAL -

Bootstrap’s mission is to meld our proven PASSION for SCRAPS with new technology to continue providing important work in the communities we serve.

This campaign and the funds it will generate will be earmarked specifically to keep Zeus and Pikachu humming along while allowing the company to place down payments on three additional EVs by 2025.

- WHAT IT COSTS -

Here’s a breakdown of all projected expenses for Bootstrap to go electric.

Upfront Costs:
  • Down payments on three additional EVs — $30,000
  • Branding and lettering of vehicles — $3,000

Annual Payments include:
  • Two existing EVs — $24,000
  • Three additional EVs — $36,00
  • Maintenance for five EVs (lowball approximate) — $15,000
  • Insurance — $22,000
  • Electric bill (approximate) — $10,000

Grand Total: $140,000

Clearly, going electric comes at a cost. But the savings in finance and time are measurable. EVs don’t require oil changes or other engine maintenance, nor are they subject to volatile price fluctuations at the pump ⛽.

With a little more money in our pocket and time back in our hands, imagine what else we could accomplish!!!

- BUT IS IT GREENER? -

Of course, the greenhouse gas emissions associated with EVs are lower than those from an average gasoline-powered vehicle, even when accounting for manufacturing. Facts supported by the #EPA.

- OUR ETHOS -

All told, this move is a reflection of Bootstrap’s ethos: to do good work for people and the planet by honoring resources and a commitment to sustainability.

- GRATITUDE -

If you’ve made it this far, we really appreciate your time. We’ll leave you with this photo of Bubba the farm dog that we snapped during a recent compost delivery to Cobble Hill Farm Education & Rescue Center in the Berkshires.

It's scenes like this on days like that that make our work so infinitely rewarding ♾️ and irresistibly fun.
