Dear family, friends, and others,
I am a firm believer in the phrase, “Experiences shape who you are.” What do I mean by this? I am certain that the experiences I have now will directly influence the person — and the physician — that I become in the future. This Summer, I have applied and been accepted to a 5-week study abroad program in Malawi, Africa. Combining my passion to help others with my dream of becoming a physician, this trip is an experience that I cannot pass up. Throughout my time in Malawi I will be doing various activities that will help grow me as a person, a student, and a future physician. I will be researching laboratory diagnostic tools and analysis to provide more efficient ways of identifying infectious diseases — such as HIV, malaria, and tuberculosis — that devastate the surrounding communities. In addition to research I will also be volunteering in health clinics, serving the surrounding communities, and learning more about international healthcare. Once I return home from this trip, I anticipate and believe that my experiences and the skills I learn will stay with me for the rest of my life.
As I continue to work and pay for my undergraduate education, I am limited both in my time and my financial resources. While I do not like to ask for help from others, I realize that I cannot make this happen financially on my own. I do believe that I am supposed to be on this trip, and I trust that God will make a way for this to happen. If you feel led to give, I would love for you to invest in me, so that I can make a difference in the world now in Malawi — and in the future as a better physician for having participated in this trip. For anyone that contributes, I will follow up with a letter about how the trip went and what I learned. Thank you so much for considering this.
Love,
Caleb Sokolowski
