"Help us help our children"
The PTO of Una Elementary school in Nashville, Tennessee is fundraising to build an Inclusive playground at our school. Our school currently has damaged out of code playground equipment in an area that is inaccessible to our growing handicap population and the overwhelming size of the more than 900 students in attendance.
In our school we have students with physical or developmental disorders, and students who have limited mobility and use a wheelchair. An inclusive playground area would serve to bridge the gap between our disabled and non-disabled students. This would prevent any student from being a bystander on the playground because they are unable to participate.
Our goal is to promote lifelong healthy lifestyles through play for our students. Children at the elementary school age are being greatly affected by obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and other preventable diseases. By having an inclusive playground, we are giving students the opportunity to fight off these diseases and become more active.
An inclusive playground provides critical support to students physical, social, and emotional development. It allows children to engage with one another and helps children with and without disabilities to discover that they are competent, capable, and able to foster friendships. Ultimately a new playground will benefit student’s health and wellness, while fostering their creativity and imagination.
An inclusive playground to accommodate our student body will cost us $92,000. We are seeking a donation from you to help us in reaching our goal.
We have passion and determination to give our students the opportunity to no longer live sedentary lives, to have equality among their peers, and to access their full potential through play. We ask that you help us help our children.
