When our 70-year-old mother returned from observing Shabbat at her daughter’s home, she found the front door was broken down and the apartment was ransacked. Cabinets had been overturned, drawers were emptied and her entire home was in disarray. The thieves had gone through every nook and cranny of her apartment, looking for anything of value that they could steal. Before leaving, they took a significant amount of cash, many forms of jewelry, a laptop computer that did not belong to her and silver from the wall unit, leaving our mother impoverished - both monetarily and spiritually.
Our mother had a liver transplant surgery five years earlier and the money used to pay for the procedure was borrowed at the time. Our mother had accumulated enough money by watching children to repay the majority of her life saving loan. That is, however, until thieves entered the picture, an act that has left her depressed and in constant tears since then.
She doesn’t understand why a pious, Shabbat observing woman should have such misery visited upon her in the later years of her life. She saved one dollar at a time for over five years to accumulate the money for the repayment of the loan, which was all gone in one fell swoop.
Due to the heartbreaking nature of this tragedy, we are desperately trying to recover the money stolen from her, in the hope that this will help her regain her spirit and her zest for life. Anything that you could do to help us achieve this vital goal would be greatly appreciated.
