Budapest Week Digitization Project

Donation protected
This invitation goes out to all of us who took part in creating Budapest Week, as well as to all our readers and fans.

In March 1991, a handful of friends launched the first independent English-language weekly newspaper in post-socialist, newly-democratic Hungary.

To celebrate our newspaper's 30th anniversary, we invite you to take part in digitizing the Budapest Week archives and hosting them online.

Two of Budapest Week's founders, Steven Carlson and Tibor Szendrei, have worked out a partnership with the Vera and Donald Blinken Open Society Archive (OSA) to carry out the work. Peter Freed has given his consent as the copyright owner.

The money raised will pay for the costs of labor and project management.

Why this matters

Budapest Week chronicled a period of great change in Hungary and, with the passing of time has become a unique record of historical significance to the Hungarian people.

This work is the legacy of those of us who created it and deserves to be preserved and shared.

Project Goals

To collect print copies of Budapest Week from at least its first four years (1991-1994.) to be deposited in the OSA’s collection.

To digitize and make searchable this archive and host it online with the OSA.

To collect and digitize any documents related to the founding of the newspaper.

About the Vera and Donald Blinken Open Society Archive
The Vera and Donald Blinken Open Society Archives (OSA) at CEU actively collects, preserves, and makes openly accessible documents related to recent history and human rights. It also experiments with new ways to contextualize primary sources, developing innovative tools to explore, represent, or bridge traditional archival collections in a digital environment. Our approach to acquisition is increasingly proactive and inclusive, and we actively seek out non-traditional material, material previously marginalized based on its content, social origin, or form. At OSA Archivum, professional archival work is integrated with public programs, and our Galeria Centralis serves as the focal point of exhibitions, performances, film screenings, lectures, and seminars. Through all of these endeavors, we advocate: open access and transparency in public administration; equal rights to information; the ethical use of private data; open formats and open standards; and broad access to cultural heritage.
