Dear Donor,
Our names are Kevin Brooks and Nicholas Melendez, we currently work as school counselors at the Bronx Academy of Letters (BAL). In addition to supporting our students academically, emotionally, and creating post-secondary plans, we also coach the Varsity Girl’s Basketball team at BAL.
The Bronx Academy of Letters is a title 1 public school located in the South Bronx. Title 1 means that over 90 percent of enrolled students are considered low income and live below the poverty line. Although our scholar’s families struggle financially, with an average family income below $15,000, BAL takes great pride in providing opportunities for our students. As a result of the many opportunities provided to scholars, we are able to keep our students engaged and boast an 85% graduation rate. This is 10% above the NYC DOE average graduation rate of 75%.
A huge part of our academic success at BAL is tied to our sports program, which has been built to provide more sports opportunities to Black and Latino students and requires rigorous academic standards to become a student athlete. Last season Girls Varsity Basketball made the most progress towards graduation requirements and we made the playoffs for the first time in school history.
Considering all of the success we have experienced recently, we would also like to look the part. Due to the fact that the majority of our students are living below the poverty line, many of our student athletes do not have the means to pay for new athletic equipment or attire. We are fund raising to be able to purchase new uniforms, water bottles, and athletic bags for our team. Currently the girls are playing in the same jerseys that have been recycled for the last 4 years, most are stained from previous player’s perspiration and others have holes.
Our season starts on December 6th and the order takes two weeks to be completed, therefore we need to raise the funds as soon as possible. We would like to thank you for taking the time to read this, and we would appreciate your support of the BAL Girls Varsity Basketball Team!
