Mandiamo BRING ME HOME alla Berlinale

Introduzione

Ciao! Mi chiamo Nikolas Mengel e fin da piccolo ho sentito il desiderio di esprimermi in particolar modo attraverso le immagini. Inizialmente attraverso la fotografia e successivamente girando i miei primi cortometraggi. Una volta iniziato il liceo, soprattutto grazie agli insegnamenti dei miei professori, ho definitivamente capito cosa volevo fare e da qui il cinema per me è diventato un'ossessione. Ad oggi ho cercato di non smettere di creare e ora, attraverso una fusione delle mie due passioni più grandi, sono arrivato a questo progetto.

Idea

"Un astronauta si ritrova disperso nello spazio sconfinato in seguito ad un grave incidente.  C’è la possibilità di un soccorso in extremis ma i livelli di ossigeno rimasto scendono a vista d’occhio. La voce del comandante di volo della missione accompagna e sostiene i suoi respiri affannosi.
C’è davvero poco tempo. Il desiderio, in questa situazione di crisi, diventa voler parlare con sua moglie."

Questa è l'idea che ho avuto quasi 3 anni fa e che negli ultimi mesi del 2019 non mi ha lasciato più in pace. Continuavano a venirmi idee sui personaggi, sui dialoghi, sull'atmosfera di questa estrema situazione in ogni luogo in cui mi trovavo. Piano piano gli appunti che prendevo aumentavano e diventavano sempre più articolati ed è qui che ho capito che tutto ciò poteva diventare qualcosa di concreto.

Sceneggiatura

A gennaio di quest'anno ho deciso di trasformare queste idee in una vera e propria sceneggiatura. Grazie all’aiuto del collettivo Torinese La Spice (Emma Bresciani, Diletta Meoni, Roberto Todone e Matteo Borsato) dopo quasi tre mesi di lavorazione, innumerevoli modifiche e 9 stesure è nata una spettacolare ed emozionante sceneggiatura.




Casting

Una volta terminata la sceneggiatura, in aprile ho iniziato a ricercare gli interpreti. A causa della pandemia appena esplosa, l'unica modalità possibile in quel momento è stata quella dei casting online. Sono arrivate inaspettatamente quasi duecento richieste e altrettanti selftape che sono stati attentamente visionati e valutati uno ad uno. Dopo un mese si sono rivelati finalmente il volto e le voci dei tre personaggi. Stefano Gianino era senza ombra di dubbio Tommaso Benini, Roberta Russo ha catturato le orecchie di tutti con la sua inconfondibile voce e Alex Nezam , oltre alla sue incredibili doti attoriali, si è rivelato una preziosissima risorsa per la realizzazione dell’intero progetto.  Nelle settimane successive sono diventate fondamentali le table read via Skype organizzate assieme a tutti loro.


Realizzazione della tuta spaziale

Parte così una delle fasi più complicate. Dopo aver cercato online in tutta Europa e negli Stati Uniti, purtroppo non ho trovato quello che per questo progetto era fondamentale, una replica di una tuta spaziale Mercury, realistica, adatta alle misure di Stefano ad un costo accessibile. 
Decido così di voler realizzare la tuta spaziale da zero. Affido la realizzazione del costume alla talentuosa Valentina Bertossi , diplomata al Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia di Roma, supportata dalla sarta Elena Grandi .

Dopo quasi due mesi di studi, ricerche e lavorazioni, finalmente Stefano prova per la prima volta la meravigliosa tuta spaziale, progettata prendendo come spunto ciò che hanno indossato i primissimi astronauti americani a partire dagli anni ‘60 nel programma Mercury della NASA.








Locandina

In tutto questo, nasce per l’occasione un'apposita locandina ideata dall’artista messicano Jesus Velazquez  in collaborazione con la mia amica e collega, Silvia Pais  che riesce a rendere visivamente lo spirito di quella che è diventata già una meravigliosa avventura.

A fine agosto, poco prima delle date di shooting, si completa la miglior troupe che potessi desiderare:

- Filippo Telleschi : Fonico di presa diretta
- Clara Balducelli : Produttrice esecutiva

Di grande importanza per la realizzazione di questo progetto il supporto tecnico degli amici di RCE Verona , ADCOM  ed Exformat Movie . Aziende che hanno creduto in me, sostenendomi attraverso la fornitura di tutta l’attrezzatura e gli spazi necessari alla realizzazione del corto.

Nel fantastico teatro di posa messo a nostra disposizione da Exformat Movie iniziano magicamente le riprese. Le luci si abbassano, cala il silenzio e una tuta spaziale argentata scintilla nel buio profondo. Sembra di essere veramente nello spazio. 

Lo shooting si compone di due giornate estremamente intense in cui tutto l'enorme lavoro di preparazione e di progettazione che c'è stato nei mesi precedenti da vita ad un’esperienza per me indimenticabile. 





Montaggio, effetti speciali e corsa alla Berlinale

Introduction

Hi! My name is Nikolas Mengel and from an early age I felt the desire to express myself especially through images. Initially through photography and later by shooting my first short films. Once I started high school, especially thanks to the teachings of my professors, I definitely understood what I wanted to do and from here cinema became an obsession for me. To date I have tried not to stop creating and now, through a fusion of my two greatest passions, I have arrived at this project.


Idea

"An astronaut finds himself lost in boundless space following a serious accident. There is the possibility of a rescue in extremis but the levels of oxygen left drop visibly. The voice of the flight commander of the mission accompanies and supports his labored breathing. There is very little time. Desire, in this situation of crisis, becomes wanting to talk to his wife. "

This is the idea that I had almost 3 years ago and that in the last months of 2019 has never left me alone. I kept coming up with ideas about the characters, the dialogues, the atmosphere of this extreme situation in every place I was. Gradually the notes I took increased and became more and more articulated and it is here that I realized that all of this could become something real.


Script

In January of this year, I decided to turn these ideas into a real script. Thanks to the help of the Turin collective La Spice (Emma Bresciani, Diletta Meoni, Roberto Todone and Matteo Borsato), after almost three months of work, countless changes and 9 drafts, a spectacular and exciting script was born.


Casting

Once the script was finished, in April I started looking for actors. Due to the pandemic that just broke out, the only possible way at that time was by doing online castings. Almost two hundred requests arrived unexpectedly and the same number of selftapes were carefully examined and evaluated one by one. After a month, the faces and voices of the three characters were finally revealed. Stefano Gianino was undoubtedly Tommaso Benini, Roberta Russo captured everyone's ears with her unmistakable voice and Alex Nezam, in addition to his incredible acting skills, proved to be a very precious resource for the realization of the entire project. In the following weeks, the table reads via Skype, organized with all of them, became fundamental.


Making of the space suit

 Thus one of the most complicated phases begins. After searching online throughout Europe and the United States, I unfortunately did not find what was essential for this project, a realistic replica of a Mercury spacesuit, suitable for Stefano's measurements and at an affordable cost.

So, I decided to make the spacesuit from scratch. I entrust the creation of the costume to the talented Valentina Bertossi, graduated from the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Rome, supported by the costume maker Elena Grandi.

After almost two months of studies, research and workmanship, Stefano finally tries on the marvelous spacesuit for the first time, designed taking as a cue what the very first American astronauts wore from the 1960s in NASA's Mercury program.


Movie poster

In all of this, a movie poster was born for the occasion designed by Mexican artist Jesus Velazquez in collaboration with my friend and colleague, Silvia Pais who manages to visually convey the spirit of what has already become a wonderful adventure.

Shooting

By the end of August, just before the shooting dates, the best crew I could wish for is complete:

The technical support of the friends of RCE Verona, ADCOM and Exformat Movie is of great importance for the realization of this project. Companies that believed in me, supporting me through the supply of all the equipment and spaces necessary for the realization of the short.

In the fantastic soundstage made available to us by Exformat Movie, shooting magically begins. The lights dim, silence falls, and a silver spacesuit sparkles in the deep darkness. It feels like you are truly in space. 

The shooting consists of two extremely intense days in which all the enormous preparation and design work that took place in the previous months gives life to an unforgettable experience for me.


Editing, VFX and race to the Berlinale

Now we need your help! If the project has thrilled you, don't miss the opportunity to become part of it. With your support we will be able to speed up the editing and special effects processes on which we are working hard these days with Diego Bellante in order to send the short film in time to the Berlin Film Festival in the Berlinale Shorts section.

- Management fee requested by the Festival.
