Brain tumor surgery for Evanie Niyonizigiye
Donation protected
Hello everyone. I am a cancer surgeon in Boston and my 9 year old daughter happens to be in a 4th grade class with a new student that came to our school named Leo. He is from Africa but now living in the United States. Leo suffered a severe burn accident to his head and body that required him coming to the United States for treatment where he currently lives with his guardian Alex.
Leo's mother Evanie who is 48 years old was just diagnosed with a brain tumor requiring surgical treatment. You can see from her photo her right eye is no longer centered due to the big tumor pressing on the front of her brain. She lives in a small village and could not afford the trip to the capital of Bujumbura for her brain MRI. Alex helped get the money for the MRI and travel to the hospital but Leo's sister had to quit school to now take care of their mother. The tumor is currently causing her blindness, headaches and other medical problems.
She met with a neurosurgeon at the Centre medico-chirurgical de Kinindo who explained she needed surgery however they nave no means in affording her surgery and medical care. Unfortunately Leo and Alex cannot travel to Africa due to their immigration status right now. In hearing about this and due to visa issues, she cannot come to the United States for her care, so I am trying to help them in any way I can so that Leo's mother can get her necessary treatment. In starting this GoFundMe page, I'm hoping we can help this family who has already been through so much.
Thank you for your consideration,
Katherina Zabicki Calvillo, MD, FACS
