Hi, my name is Dr. Brown, the founder of The Black River Film Festival.

The Black River Film Festival was born from a simple vision—bringing storytelling, culture, and cinematic excellence to one of Jamaica’s richest historical towns. From the moment we chose Black River as our home, something beautiful happened: the community embraced us, and we embraced them.

Families benefited, young people found inspiration, and the community gained pride in hosting an international festival that showcased the brilliance of Jamaica and the Caribbean. We were well on our way to establishing the Black River Film Festival as the premier cultural and tourism feature of St. Elizabeth.

But after Hurricane Melissa, many families, students, and small businesses are now struggling to rebuild. Homes were damaged, livelihoods disrupted, and the need for support is urgent.

We are shifting our focus to direct community recovery—starting with the students of Black River High School. Our priority is to help them regain their dignity and stability by providing:

School uniforms

Stationery and essential supplies

Lunch support for the most affected students

Education is a key pillar in rebuilding after disaster. Ensuring that our children remain in school is critical to creating a stronger, safer, and brighter future for the entire community. If we keep students engaged and prevent them from becoming unattached youth—who are at greater risk of exploitation—we can help protect their future and strengthen our community’s foundation.
