From September 4–19, I’ll be celebrating my 40th birthday by exploring Peru, visiting Machu Picchu, and making the absolute most of my budding birding obsession.

In 2025, I met 76 different bird species. So far in 2026, I’ve already met 108. Peru is home to more than 1,900 recorded species, so my life list is about to get very exciting.

Birding, for me, is much more than keeping a list. It gives me a reason to slow down, look closely, and be fully present. Time outside offers joy, wonder, perspective, and healing—and everyone deserves opportunities to experience those things.

That’s why I’m using this adventure to raise money for Outdoor Afro's Day of Giving, August 18-19.

Outdoor Afro celebrates and inspires Black connections and leadership in nature. Our work helps more Black people and families build the confidence, skills, and community to experience the outdoors and to know that we ALL belong outside.

As I prepare for this milestone birthday, I can’t think of a better way to celebrate than by helping create more Black joy, healing, and belonging outside.

Now for the fun part: How many different bird species will I meet in Peru?

I’m inviting everyone to predict the number of unique species I’ll identify between September 4 and September 19. If you donate, I’ll reach out to collect your prediction. You’re also welcome to submit a prediction without donating.

When I return, I’ll share my final count and reveal how close our predictions came. Whether you donate, make a prediction, share this page, or simply follow the adventure, I’d love to have you be part of it.

Together, we can help more people find their own joy and healing outdoors.

Thank you for celebrating 40 with me. Now, tell me: How many birds do you think I’ll meet?
