Between The Crossroads - Calvin’s Short Film

Hello, my name is Calvin Wong and I'm a student filmmaker trying to raise money for my upcoming short film called Between The Crossroads. This story is personal to me because I too am a 1st generation Chinese-Canadian who suffers from eczema.

 

Our goal is bring awareness to eczema as well as to connect with people who are also suffering with Asian and Western cultural difference/obligations. I personally experienced a lot of self-pressure of trying to make my parents proud but at the same time find something that I have a passion to do. It has always been difficult to display my interests to my parents. I always felt that I had to prove to them that my interests also can have financial stability.

 

Synopsis

Charles is a 23-year-old Chinese-Canadian who lives with his single immigrant mother. He has never met his father. Yim, his mother, is the only caretaker in his life. The mixture between Chinese and western culture leaves him deeply conflicted. He wants to do right by his mother by studying computer systems technology in university to provide for her financially in the future, but his true passion is photography. Yim being an overbearing mother only serves to intensify his internal conflict as he tries to passively oblige all of her expectations of him. With an important final exam quickly approaching, Yim suffocates Charles but obsessing over and reminding him of how his performance on the exam will determine both of their futures. Increasingly unable to deal with the extreme weight of expectation, Charles quietly contemplates whether or not suicide is the only way to resolve the unbearable conflict within him. On the exam day, Charles hits a breaking point, forcing him to make a final, definitive decision on the course of his life.
