Benjamin Derrick for Headway
At the end of 2024, my friend George was hit by a reckless driver, which led to extensive injuries including severe head trauma, and a long and demanding journey to recovery following life-saving surgery. In light of what George has been through, I will be taking part in the Jungfrau Marathon 2025, a 42km race up a section of the Bernese Alps in Switzerland - with the goal to raise money for a charity of George’s choice!
As an update, miraculously George came out the other side with all the humour, personality and mental brilliance he had before. And now? He’s back living life, just making sure he gives his body what it needs to continue its recovery - carrying an added layer of stoicism that I, and many others, deeply admire.
I’ve been inspired by George’s strength and ability to face every new challenge with courage and clarity. He’s had to make some incredibly tough decisions, and he continues to move forward and shape his life in a way only George could.
With that in mind, I recently asked George to probably make the easiest decision he’s had to make in recent months: I asked him to choose a charity for me to run for.
The charity, Headway, helps support people and families facing the effects of brain injury by providing practical help, guidance and long-term support. Their work helps people adjust to change and rebuild their lives.
I look forward to the challenge, and I will certainly need some of George's mental strength to get me up the incline!
Over the next few weeks I will provide some more information on the marathon and the challenge!
