The awakening of the volcano Agung on the Indonesian island of Bali has triggered a great preventive evacuation. The area in a 12 km radius around the volcano crater was declared by the Indonesian government as a danger zone in view of the risk of eruption. People living in this area were asked to leave their homes.
The population of this zone is likely to lose everything in an eruption. There are refugee camps set up in many places accommodate these people. Currently more than 100,000 people have been evacuated. This is done in an organized manner without any kind of panic as opposed to what some media are reporting.
In my village, Tianyar, there are 3 refugee camps where hundreds of people stay. The home of Made Suriani, who I know well, and some friends who visited me here in Bali, is surrounded by 70 people with their cattle. I meet them daily. They are mainly cattle farmers, or small craftsmen, with children. They left everything, and now they are helpless.
Others did not want to leave their cattle because for them it is their capital. Just as we have a savings account or investment. The problem is that they do not have access to the camps (sports room, forum, etc.) so they stay on family grounds.
In Bali there is a strong community spirit, much is being done to help these people, but the food sources are insufficient.
I want to help these 3 camps, as well as Made, who will be the victim of evacuation. This is provided by basic means such as rice, instant noodles, eggs, vegetables, fish and oil.
It would be good to be able to count on your support.
I've never done such thing in my life, but I'm witnessing a big dramatic event. It's very different experiencing this from up close, rather than in front of my tv in Europe. I'm privileged here, but I'm one of them, and I feel an urge to help. I want to be active in helping them to get through this situation they never wanted.
Yes, I hope I can count on your support.
