We have increased the funding amount. Workers Compensation doesn't cover pregnancy and birth because they are unrelated to her injury so Leah will be paying $5,000 out of pocket deductible for her birth. We chatted and she also is in need of a new ramp in the garage and other adaptive equipment for motherhood in a wheelchair totaling $3,000.

It isn't just furbabies anymore! Human-Baby Ellie Grace Nixon Fitzgerald is on her way and her birth offers Mama a unique opportunity.
In August of 2018, Leah was in a life altering accident while working construction for Habitat for Humanity. A forklift tipped over, crushing Leah underneath. Her spine was severed. In an instant, she was fighting for her life. Leah is paralyzed from the armpits down and her right leg was amputated, but miraculously, she is still able to carry her own baby! (Ellie is due late July 2021.)
As medical advances are being made every day in stem cell research, harvesting stem cells from the umbilical chord at birth could give Leah the opportunity to heal her spinal cord-- potentially providing relief from her chronic nerve pain, regaining movement and sensation below her break (maybe even walking?!), and repairing shoulder tissue in the future (which is likely, due to heavy usage as a wheelchair user.)
The cost of $6450 will provide for collection and storage (up to 25 years) for both blood and tissue stem cells from the umbilical cord. Even if we don’t meet our goal, Leah and Kelsey will be paying the rest out of pocket for the collection and storage.
