Support for the Hansen Family

Around Thanksgiving, Bodie began to have some trouble with his speech. Initially, we thought it was possibly a migraine coming on, work stress, starting to get sick, or just pure exhaustion from being an educator during that time in the year. By Christmas, it was clear things weren't improving. We found out he had a brain tumor shortly after. After consulting with local neurosurgeons, we were told it was inoperable, and he went in for a biopsy. He was diagnosed with glioblastoma. With that news, we decided to travel to Houston to consult with MD Anderson. They agreed with our local neurosurgeons. In the meantime, our local neurosurgeon had suggested we consult with a neurosurgeon at UCSF. Dr Hervey-Jumper specializes in these types of tumors and in the area of the brain that Bodie's is located. He offered surgery. We went to San Francisco on January 28. Dr. Hervey-Jumper was able to perform an eight-hour awake craniotomy, meaning Bodie was awake and interacting with the surgical team, to preserve Bodie's speech and motor function. The surgeon was able to remove about 95% of the tumor. We spent a little over a week recovering in the hospital and then moved to an inpatient rehab facility for another week in San Francisco. His speech and motor functioning are intact, but he still needs rehab to make those connections stronger in his brain. We are now home and will continue to do the rehab locally. Next steps are radiation and a daily chemo pill. We appreciate all the love, prayers, and support for our family. We are blessed to have a great support system, and that includes everyone reading this. We wouldn't be able to walk this journey on our own.
