Loki's Eye Surgery
Don protégé
July 31 UPDATE: Loki had his surgery on July 28th and all went well! He is in recovery now and enduring 38 eye drops a day! I am happy I am off work for the summer because it is a fulltime job! He has had some high pressures and trouble with dilating properly in his right eye, but his pressure is down now and the pupil is slowly starting to respond properly to light. We are on the mend! Please keep sending your good thoughts/vibes/prayers as during the 3 weeks after surgery things can turn quickly. Long story short, he is not "out of the woods" yet, but he is on the right track!
JULY 17 UPDATE: Loki had all the required pre-surgery tests done today ($1200 later…), and his surgery has been scheduled for July 28th. We are going to do the cataract surgery on both eyes on this date instead of waiting to do the second eye. It’s a risk as he can still see quite well out of his right eye. So should the surgery fail, he could lose sight in one or both. However, we know he will need it in the future, and it’s more cost effective to do both at the same time ($6800 vs $11,000). Send all your positive vibes our way please!
Hi, my name is Amy, and I am fundraising for my 15-month-old dog, Loki, to have cataract surgery on both eyes. I have already spent $737 in vet bills and medications just to find this diagnosis, but this is nothing compared to what is to come.
Loki developed cataracts at an early age due to being born with microphthalmia, a condition where his eyes did not grow to full size during gestation. He currently cannot see out of his left eye, and it is ready for cataract surgery now ($5500). He also has a cataract beginning to form in his right eye and will require surgery in this eye in the future (another $5500). Due to his condition, and as a result of the surgeries, he will require life-long medications in the form of eye drops as well as regular follow up appointments with a veterinarian ophthalmologist to ensure he is not developing glaucoma which would result in the removal of his eye(s) for his health and comfort.
The cataract surgery he needs has an 85% chance of success, leaving him with a 15% chance of it being unsuccessful. Should the surgery be unsuccessful, he will be left blind and likely develop glaucoma and lose his eyes.
This has all been very heartbreaking for me to learn over the last few weeks, and now I am faced with the financial burden of this as well. I don't usually ask for help of any kind, but if you are able to support Loki in any way, even if it is good thoughts and vibes for a successful surgery, I would be forever grateful.
Loki is a happy and loving puppy who is always ready to eat pancakes. His favourite place to be is cuddled next to my legs or my feet. He can usually be found following me or his sister around. He is cautious of new people but usually warms up rather quickly and then is quite generous with his kisses. He has the most strikingly beautiful blue eyes, and anyone that has ever met him just has to comment on how gorgeous they are. It is painful to think he may lose them.
