My father, Douglas DeOre, is the strongest man I have ever known. He is incredibly optimistic, fun-loving, and works endlessly to provide a secure and stable life for myself, my younger brother, and my mother. Sadly, in May of 2013, he was diagnosed with ALS, a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects his nerve cells and causes motor neurons throughout his body to eventually die, which leads to the loss of muscle movement and limits him from doing everyday activities such as walking. When my father was first diagnosed, he only had slight trouble using his hands; however, the disease has progressed rapidly to the point where he is now wheelchair bound. Throughout the progression of the disease, we have spent thousands of dollars on medications, doctors’ visits, physical therapy, and medical necessities such as a wheelchair ramp and lift so he can move in and out of our home. Unfortunately, the costs associated with his daily care taking is rising and the money we have saved is quickly running out. If there is anything anyone could do to help our family provide for my father, as he has done for us, our family would be eternally grateful. Through this life-changing time for our family, my father has proven that he is an extraordinary man and deserves to have the opportunity to fight for this new challenging life.
