Support Doctors Treating COVID-19 in Bangladesh

Urgent Protective Gears for Frontline Doctors Treating COVID-19 Patients in Bangladesh

One of my doctor friends working in Kurmitola General Hospital (KGH) in Bangladesh shared the fear and anxiety all the doctors are in, as they are not equipped with required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). But they are regularly dealing with patients showing symptoms of COVID-19. The number of such patients are increasing every day.

The health care system in the country is not at all ready for combatting the pandemic. This includes monitoring arrival of travellers from affected countries, to the availability of testing kits to even provide Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for the frontline doctors attending untested patients with COVID-19 symptoms all around the country. Many doctors in hospitals have reportedly fallen sick with similar symptoms.

Bangladesh is a country with a population more than 180 million where only the capital Dhaka hosts more than 25 million people. The country's population density is 5 times of Italy's. The people of the country have poor hygiene practices and inadequate medical facilities for which the country is unprepared to combat COVID-19 which has already claimed 3 lives in Bangladesh (as of 23 March, 2020)  in only two weeks since the first detection. This makes Bangladesh's death rate as high as 9% as official infected patients count till date is 33. The unofficial number is predicted to be more than 50 and we are just in the second week.

Due to the lack and delay in supply of PPEs in Bangladesh, some of the doctors and engineers have decided to produce Protective Suits with polyesters sourced locally. They are also trying to procure N95 masks which have become very expensive and need to be imported. Amidst this global crisis the helpless people in Bangladesh need support from the global community. The frontline doctors who are risking their lives every moment, need your help and support.

Where your funds go: 100% of these funds will go to the community of doctors primarily in the most affected areas in Bangladesh to help produce, procure and distribute required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) which includes protective suits, respirators and face masks, gloves, shoe covers and protective goggles. This fundraiser aims to raise funds to support the community of frontline doctors to equip them with adequate protective gears and equipment.
