Let's get Ariel to ChicaGO - May 2020

Hello!

My name is Ariel, and I live in Southeast San Diego. I'm currently a commuter, transfer, and first generation college student in my junior year at Point Loma Nazarene University.

I recently got accepted into the Law, Justice, and Culture Institute at Olivet Nazarene University in Chicago! However, I need help raising funds for the travel, transportation around campus, food, housing, and tuition because I am unable to take out additional loans from PLNU. Even though I am able to balance my education, and two current jobs, I still need the financial support to get to Olivet.

I’m passionate about this program because it would give me more experience in my sociology and social work field; in addition, it will also contribute to my education as history/political science credit. I know I will be unable to travel aboard, so this is the closest opportunity (really my only chance) to further my education outside of my current university.

I'm looking forward to expanding my understanding in sociology and social work through this experience offered at this program. I choose to study these two professions because I want to keep working with people. I'm specifically driven towards helping youth and giving them the support system and mentorship they need. In a religious aspect, I've learned to follow Luke 6:35, to love one another, most importantly help with what you can. In my heart, I believe I am called to help those who don’t have a voice, the ones who grew up in a dysfunctional system and to get them thinking that there are more opportunities and chances that are made for them rather than the ones they were given in a broken system. In a non-religious aspect, I still have the same goals and desires for where I want to serve. Growing up, I was forced to be things I didn’t want to be, I was forced to be a person who I couldn’t be, and I was forced to do things I didn't want to do. In my gut, I still always had the feeling that I could be doing something bigger, and better; which is to help one another. Help the ones who need a voice, advocate, friend, and listener. That is why I choose sociology and social work because they both mean so much to me, and I only want to grow and be the best I can in the social sciences field.

The Law, Justice, and Culture Institute program is held May 15th - 31st, 2020 at Olivet University, and I won’t be able to get there without your support. Your support will be contributing to travel from San Diego to the university, transportation, resources such as food and housing, and covering tuition.

Thank you for taking the time to read (part of) my story.

Thank you again for your support!

Sincerely,
Ariel S.
