Hi, my name is Samantha Braunschweig. On Monday, July 14th, five lives were changed in the worst way. My niece (7), her uncle (5), her aunt (11), great uncle (37), and her grandma (42) were all driving in Iowa and were unfortunately T-boned by a semi at highway speeds. Four were injured, including all three children, and sadly, my niece's grandma died on impact. My niece is currently in the Nebraska Children's Hospital where she was airlifted. She was driven by a squad from the scene to Storm Lake Hospital, where she was then airlifted to Nebraska Children's. After multiple scans and tests, she was determined to have Diffuse Axonal Injury of the brain. In other words, a serious traumatic brain injury. She had small fluid along the inferior margin of the liver, small pelvic free fluid, multiple lesions of the brain, lacerations to her cheek, shoulder, chest, and thigh, and a broken tooth that was possibly ingested. She has no movement on the right side of her body. My niece Kenzlie is fighting so hard, but it's going to be a long road to recovery. She currently has a feeding tube placed and diapers for bathroom use. She's constantly monitored 24/7 by nurses. She is on anti-seizure meds to prevent the brain from having any. She currently cannot use the right side of her body and has trouble looking to the right as well. Every day she makes small strides; those small strides are HUGE to us though. We are still a ways away from knowing when she will go to a rehab facility, as she will have to learn how to do everything all over again. I'm reaching out for help to cover all medical, food, travel, and lodging expenses as Kenzlie recovers from this horrific accident. We are all from Minnesota and far away from home, which makes this even harder on everyone. My sister Sierra (Kenzlie's mother) has another child that is 5 months old, and her home is 7 hours away. They all are going to need as much support as possible. Even a prayer goes a long way. Thank you for your time and possible donation.
